The design of a pressure vessel generally starts with acquiring operating temperature, operating pressure, medium composition and characteristics, as well as vessel dimensions from process conditions. Based on the known conditions, preliminary dimensions are determined, suitable materials and structures are selected, and then strength calculations are performed in accordance with specifications to define the wall thickness of the cylinder, head and all pressure-bearing components.
